Social Action

The Social Action program formed in 1934 was conceived by Bro. Elmo M. Anderson to focus on improving the general wellbeing of disenfranchised people. The mission of the International Social Action Program is to encourage social, political and philanthropic leadership which strengthens our respective communities and our membership by:

  • Educating fraternity members on health issues affecting them and their families

  • Increasing visibility and sense of self-worth by/through serving in the community

  • Providing education/information about political and community issues, and increasing awareness of the legislative process

  • Involving the membership in fundraising activities that support organizations sharing our vision

  • Promoting health awareness to encourage prevention of health challenges and promote health maintenance

2020 Sigma-Zeta

Legislative Day at the Capital 

The Blue and White Family from across the state of Florida traveled to Tallahassee for the Sigma-Zeta Day at the Florida state Capitol.  Working together to engage the state’s elected leadership about issues, concerns, and challenges that we may encounter in the communities throughout the state of Florida.

2020 Men's Health Fair

The brothers of the Beta Lambda Sigma Chapter partnered with the Nation Action Network (Tallahassee area) in a 2020 men’s health fair. The brothers also supplied at their table station with Apples, bananas, and water. There were many essential vendors there that were geared towards men’s health including FAMU college of nursing and FAMU student health services.

Volunteering with Farm Share

The Beta Lambda Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, volunteered with Florida Farm share to distribute 33,000 pounds of fresh fruit and groceries for families that are in need during this pandemic.

Brothers in Sigma and various organization groups worked hard to break down the 33,000 pounds of fresh food and fruits into individual bags for the families. This was a drive up set up no one was allowed out of there cars to comply with. CDC guidelines. Established in 1991, Farm Share is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization works daily to make sure that food-insecure Floridians receive the food and support they need. 

National Sigma Day of Service

On September 26, 2020 Brothers of the Brothers of the Beta Lambda Sigma chapter participated in the National Sigma Day of Service. Where brothers took part In the adopt a highway road clean up initiative.

 

Volunteers enter conduct litter removal at regularly scheduled intervals. Many miles of highway are adopted statewide by various organizations, allowing civic-minded people to make a difference in their communities. This eases the load of DOT work crews, enabling them to devote more time to other road maintenance and special highway projects.
